Tricycle Miriam Hyman Award for Best Young Artist 2011

The Tricycle Gallery, 269 Kilburn High Road, London NW6 7JR

Winner: Leon Ellis

Report by Natalie Ryde, Artist in Residence

The winner of the 2011 Tricycle Miriam Hyman Award for best Young Artist is 19 year old Leon Ellis for his intricate drawings of computer circuit boards (picture below) and photographic self portrait. Leon is in his final year at Hampstead School and has just finished his Art A-Level.

The Young Artists Groups are made up of artistically talented young people aged 9-19 who attend school in Brent. Artists are selected by their school teachers. Classes are run by the Tricycle Artist in Residence, in the Paintbox studio, on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Since January we have welcomed a new group of Junior Young Artists, aged 9-11 on Wednesday afternoons adding an exciting new vitality to the work in the exhibition (picture below).

This year’s exhibition took place in the Tricycle Gallery from 16th to 28th May with a celebration party, prize giving and printmaking workshop on Sunday 22 May. The gallery was buzzing with activity with children, mums, dads, aunties, grannies and the audience from the afternoon theatre all taking part in Natalie’s specially designed roller printing extravaganza!

Many thanks to John and Mavis Hyman for their continued support; Miriam’s prize gives the Young Artists an extra incentive to push their abilities and take pride in their achievements.
